A few changes to the site today:
First, a couple sections have been archived due to inactivity, with no activity planned. They are still accessible via the archives link. Also, the photos and postcards sections are becoming a bit more prominent on the site, with multiple people providing photos for their respective sections. I expect to have some photos of some hikes done this spring up shortly. Still need to prep all the photos though, which is typically the reason by ever getting photos up on the site.

We have moved to a new IRC server. While this should technically be transparent to all the end users, I do know the Chat script on this site seems to be having some troubles with the new linux based Undernet IRC server. I will look into this ASAP, in the meantime, I have yet to figure out why it fails to connect when it does, and it does seem to connect some of the time.

The rework of the site is coming along! All of the active pages have been validated, and it's now time to turn to all the archived pages and make sure they adhere to the layout of the new site, including the new standardized sidebar.
Once the basic rework of the site is complete, I should expect to get material that has been in the waiting up and available.
All of this will of course be hampered from my re-hiring at EA Canada for a 6 month contract, which I hope to turn into a full time position at the end of the contract. Who knows just how much time I will have after next monday.

Step one of the site validation is complete. The index/news page of this site now validates as xhtml 1.1 as well as CSS.
Major reworking of the news page was required to remove incorrect usage of tables for layout, replacing them with much cleaner div code, while making proper usage of css.
As you may have noticed, there are a few layout based changes to the news page, including removal of the iframe sidebar. The navigation is now generated via a script which is included server side for each page, and this will enable a consistent site wide navigation bar that is easy to manage. Anyways, except for a few annoying things from the ever so wonderful IE and it's non-compliance initiative, the transition went relatively smoothly, and only took a while due to the sheer amount of work necessary. Oh, and for IE users, having a small font size while viewing the news may screw up a few news items because IE sucks. Get firefox or opera, and the news will be fixed. Damn M$ Bastards.
Expect more updates soon. I plan on re-coding all active sections of the site so that they validate, and will update the sidebar throughout the entire site.
As a note, the links and content should not change with this validation update. If you notice anything not working, do let me know.

Okay, this is retarded. Nothing in almost 3 months. Well, I have a few things I can do, but there's no time. I have Rovent pictures. My partner has been very helpful. She has scanned them all in, and prepped the images for posting. Wooo! So it's just a matter of getting them up. But that still takes time I don't have. Plus, I would like to try and recode most parts of the site so it's more compliant. Of course, this is a lot of work, so who knows when I'll get around to that. I also have a few other things lying around to get up. Fix something here, write a script for something there. And if you look into the site, sometimes there are things happening that don't actually get posted in this news. For example, the DJ section of this site, for DJ AqvaYak gets updates on a semi-regular basis with new gigs, new demos and new pictures, so be sure to check them out. Also, there are sections which I do not directly control, like Kyle's Photo Album, so it's very easy for him to change that and for me to not even know anything has changed. And there is another gallery in the works, but there's still a lot of scripting involved to get it up and running. So yeah. Do not fear! The site is still alive and kicking with new stuff here and there, even though the news may not reflect that.

So, fun with perl! I have written up some scripts to allow for feedback to be submitted by anyone quickly and easily! The comments, once moderated, (to deal with spammers and flamers) will be viewable to everyone! Weeeee! Pretty cool. Anyways, to check it out, there's a link in the sidebar

Well, this year is fast coming to a close. Of course time is as tight as always, even with the 2 month 'break' I have between employment and my final semester. Anyways, there are no explicit plans for any new material, but of course material slowly trickles in, and eventually makes it's way up. Anyways, I do hope to do a couple more things to the site which may lead to 'easier' material. By far the biggest hurdle in placement of material is the amount of time it takes to prep the material for the site. With my explorations into perl, it has allowed for certain things to be automated, including the bulk of the administration for sections like Kyle's Photo Album. I can't make any promises, cause I can almost promise that they would be broken. Yep.

Power Outage Strikes again. This time in the early hours of the morning. Power went out around 5:30 am sunday morning. I recovered services when I woke up (which was fairly late as the power outage also rendered my alarm clock useless) grrr. A bit over an hour to bring all the machines back up. Not what I needed to start a busy day.

I have successfully migrated to a new single webserver. Out with the old 2 server combination and using different ports to access them. It was a pain in the ass, and the reliability of one of the servers was going down and was in need of replacing. So now the site is hosted entirely on a single linux machine. Wooo!
Of course, this brings many possible problems. First, updating *all* the links on the site so they work on the new system/setup. Also, I made a major directory structure change to website, so search engines are going to have some fun for a while. Just make sure you re-bookmark the site, because any old bookmarks may no longer work. It'll just take time to work out all the old bookmarks and links.
Also as a last note, with the moving of the webservers, I officially removed the forum. It did not see enough traffic to warrant being setup on the new webserver. In fact, it saw almost no traffic at all except when staff really pushed it, and even then it saw minimal traffic.
If you encounter any problems with the site, let me know asap!

Well, last year was a very busy year. For me at least. Unfortunately, not so much for the site. The site had large time gaps in it. This is something that I hope to rectify in the coming year, but I already know it's going to be very busy. A few highlights from this past year:
- An amazing amount of pictures for Rovent
- A wonderful Medieval Day at Morrhaven Manor
- One year for DJ AqyaYak as a part of the DougTheSlug.ca Site. (Added on Dec 25 of 2003!)
- The coming of two new members into the DougTheSlug.ca Community, Kyle and Garrett. Look for Garrett soon in the Slug Bits!
- A much needed facelift for the main news section of the site
Anyways, I have my work cut out for me for the next few days. Some of the stuff you will see, some you will not. I finally got my linux mailserver online. This is a major step in migrating my mac server unit to linux. Until next time!
