Merry Christmas!
I will be back in a few days, and hopefully then I might have a chance to put up some material. Have a nice holiday.

It looks like we're back up and running. I hope to have a little time to put some stuff up. It's been rather hectic dealing with this issue. I've had to change plans. With this, I now have static IP's and larger bandwidth. Both of which are good, but they cost extra $$. Yeah, got some things that need to be done. I plan to move some services around, migrate things to different platforms. Lots of work set out for me. Plus some updates! I've got a crack critic in there somewhere and a whack of photos.

Well, today I called Telus and upgraded our adsl from a residential account to a business account. This will mean static IP's, and I will be allowed to host services as stated in the license agreement. This will hopefully mean no more major troubles from telus, except for the occaisional outage. They expect to make the switchover by friday. Which means all my services should be back up at that time.

Well, in the wee hours of the night, Telus changed my dynamic IP for the first time in over a year and a half. But that's not the problem. The problem is that they changed the subnet I was attached to. The new subnet filters all the critical ports. Grrr. So *everything* is down. You won't be able to read this until I get things back up. No clue when that will happen.

Well, If anyone tried accessing the site mid/late this morning. They didn't get anything. Power went out. And the power going out decided to take a 600$ piece of equipment with it. F***. Long story. I'm now down one 24 port nortel busines policy switch. Anyways, services are back up. They were brought back up sometime between 11 and 12 this morning. I'm really tired now, and I've lost a lot of time to this. I'm going to bed.

Alrighty kids! It's time to use the forum. I'm going to try and really push the use of the forum and see if it takes off. Talk about anything you want! Just keep it tasteful. Also remember the goals of this site. Original material and to have fun. So get on there. Every day! And say something!

Uh... no...
It's time for a Crack Critic - We Were Soldiers.

Well, Telus is down. You won't see this until Telus comes back up. But in case anyone was wondering, this is why you couldn't access anything on the dougtheslug.ca network. I can't really complain about Telus reliability since as far as I know, it's been good for months on end without any problems. But Telus tech support has done something really annoying. Instead of punching in numbers to choose menus to go to the right area in tech support, they have this voice recognition stuff. And it's nowhere near as reliable. Basically, it's like punching in numbers to choose the option, except half the time it can't understand what number you're punching. Grrr... it takes even longer to go through the tech support tree to get the information I need. Anyways, hopefully Telus brings their net up soon.

Well, nothing has been going up for a while. Might as well put up what I'm working on in school. CMPT 461 is gonna be a sweet course. Using a brand new rendering tool developed at Stanford for teaching. PBRT! So part of our first assignment is to make a cornell box. Enjoy! I'll post other assignments up, especially the final project, which is to render a photo realistic image. Crazy!

Wow, did that ever suck. My net went down around 2 pm yesterday afternoon! It's been down for 3/4 of a day. This wasn't telus. For some reason, my external NIC decided to stop, requiring a reboot of the machine to bring the hardware back up. It was weird. I'm not sure what was going on. But I couldn't bring the NIC back up because the machine said it couldn't find it. Luckily a reboot fixed this. If i get time, I'll likely look into this further. Sorry for the downtime.

Sean has written up a standalone piece. Similar in style to his Contest of Champions. Hear about Tommy Vercetti's Rampage in Vice City.

Man, what a weekend. Lan Party was a blast. Of course, once again, I completely forgot to pull out the camera. I'm slightly miffed that I forgot. Oh well. Had some fun times playing Battlefield1942 - Desert Combat and Freelancer, plus I managed to get even more people hooked on Freelancer. Anyways, no clue when the next Lan Party will be, likely the next time I get a chance to hold the house hostage again for 24 hours.

We have a new facelift for the site today. There will be icons associated with each post on the news page to help you know what the post is about and who it is from. The bulk of the posts will be from me, but there are others who submit material from time to time.

Monday June 7, 2004. 16:11
Wow, a project and a half! I have spent all day scanning in the pictures from Baker and the Medieval Festival. It will still take me a while to prep the images for the site, so please be patient. I hope to work on the Baker pictures tomorrow morning before I go to work and get them up. There are noticeably more Festival pictures though, so they'll take more than one morning to prep. Quite an exciting weekend this has been.

The last of the Baker pictures are still sitting in the camera on a half finished film. I have decided to wait until an event this weekend, to finish off the film. It will be expensive getting all these films developed.

Baker Pictures coming soon! Just need to get them developed.

Time to put our thinking caps on. We have a few Mac Pluses which need 'disposing'. Need ideas on how to launch/throw these puppies. Where to do the event and make sure we have plans for cleanup. This will be the first annual Mac Toss (assuming it happens).

Well, this pisses me off to no end. My main switch died on me today. I was at work when it happened. Lost connection to everything except my router. I couldn't really tell what was going on from work except for the fact that my router was the only machine i could see. Period. A couple hours of downtime. Nothing I could have done about that short of skipping work. I have swapped in an old hub which is working fine in the meantime. On the plus side, I found the receipt for the unit that died, and it is still supposedly under its' 1 year warranty. Yes, this switch died only after about 8 months of use. Most people would figure that a 24 port switch would be able to work a little longer than that. This guy saw almost constant traffic during those 8 months, but definitely nothing to stress the thing. (Which I could easily do if I chose to. A few choice flood pings from some of my machines to some others internally would really give the switch a run for its money) Anyways, now I gotta go all the way out to richmond to find out what the hell I do with this thing. Joy. I do not have the time or money to do that right now. Oh well, I want something back in ASAP, a 10 M hub is painfully slow at times.

Sunday April 25, 2004. 22:41
Well, services were down for a lot longer than I wanted. Not much I can do about it. Too many cables to pull out. I can't believe the mess of cables. Luckily I don't have to remember what cable goes where because it's almost a completely new setup. Most of the cables are being put in new places. Oh well, with the shelving, it will be a lot more organized, a lot easier to access and look a lot cleaner in general. Anyways, core services should be back up now. Website, Mail, IRC and so on. Will likely update when everything is completely setup. All my non-service machines are still sitting in the middle of the floor, waiting to be placed and plugged in.
|
|
Sunday April 25, 2004. 17:37
Services will be down for a short while, including this webserver. Although downtime on this main webserver will be kept to a minimum, services such as IRC will be unavailable for a little longer. Reason for this is that a lot of the towers are being moved from one place to another, so it is very difficult to keep them running when they are being moved. Hope to be back up ASAP.

Friday April 23, 2004.
Exams finished last friday. I have started up my summer job at Vancity, and am in the process of completely rearranging my room. Of course this is to make more room for the computers and myself. The hardest part is moving the the 2 fish tanks. The marine tank took a whole day to move. Then once the room is rearranged there's all sorts of stuff going on with rearranging the comptuers themselves. With the latest addition of a Athlon Pro 3100 to the set of computers in this room, a lot of things are being rearranged. Hope to get working on material once all the moving is done. Plus, I still have pictures that have been waiting to go up for a couple months now. Never getting a chance to put them up! Next update will likely be near the end of all the moving. Hope to have the 2nd fish tank moved this weekend.

The semester is almost over! I have but only a couple lectures left, then a week and a half of insane study time before my day of suicide. SFU has so nicely screwed me by changing one of my exams without telling me, and I thus have 3 exams on one day. 9 hours of exam writing in one day. Ugh.
If I survive, I'll be on my way on plenty of projects, including setting up new machines and redoing half of the machines in my network. This may sound like a chore, but I will actually enjoy doing it. It's fun tinkering with my computers. There are also a couple other projects I can do for the summer, and I hope to have lots of pictures in for those. But I'm not going to say anymore until exams are done and I actually start working on some projects.

10,000 hits!
It has taken some time, but we have finally reached a new milestone for the site! It is hard to judge how many hits the site gets though since a lot of people get to the site using search engines, which bypass the news page, but the news has reached 10,000 hits!

The LAN party is over. Turnout wasn't quite as good as expected, but we still had enough people to almost fill all the rooms I setup. Next time, I will need to allot more space so when more people do show up, they have somewhere to go. Also, next time, I need to remember to take pictures. I completely forgot. Oh well. Had some good moments in Battlefield, and got a few people hooked on Freelancer. Until next time. [I hope to try and hold another one during the summer]

Back from Manning. What a week and a half. Still trying to cope with the extra homework I'm doing to make way for that week and a bit off, but it's coming together. Snapped 4 rolls of film out in Manning, so expect to have some pictures up soon!

Thursday February 12, 2004. 19:23
Well folks, I'm off to spend some time in Manning. I'll be leaving tomorrow night, and the excursion will end after RoVent on Sunday Feb 22. I will be coming back for a day and a bit during that time to deal with a few things like school assignments, but I am as good as gone until the 22nd!

Well, a couple things to note:
1) The spring semester is well under way. This along side of having to find a real job that pays a lot more than minimum wage for the summer is keeping me plenty busy. Hope to be able to work on some material soon for the site.
2) We didn't get any UT fights recorded over the holidays, but I still have the 3rd Mario Kart fight recorded. Just need to prep the video and write up the fight.
